Engineering Education in India

The emphasis of the post-secondary education mainly resides in the science and technology. For Technical education in the post-secondary level, engineering course is preferred. In India, there are many engineering colleges which are providing quality education in the country.
The reputed colleges are Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs).
Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs):
IITs are the group of engineering institutes of India which are autonomous .They can draft their own curricula. They have got the status of “Institutions of national importance”. Now there are sixteen IITs located in Bhubaneswar,Chennai, delhi,Gandhinagar,Guwahati,Hyderabad,Indore,Jodhpur,Kanpur,Kharagpur,Mandi,Mumbai,Patna,Ropar, roorkee and Varanasi. The overall administration is taken care by the common IIT Council which also acts as the linkage among all the IITs. IITs provide degrees from B.Tech to Ph. D.
Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs):
IIITs are the group of institutes of post-secondary education focused mainly in Information technology. They are managed by Ministry of Human Resource Development. They are autonomous in administration.
National Institutes of Technology (NITs):

NITs are the public engineering colleges of India. They provide degree courses at bachelors, masters and doctorate levels. They are autonomous so that can draft their own curricula. Earlier, they were referred as Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) and controlled by the state governments. But in 2007, Indian central government declared them as Institute of National Importance.

College admission India

College admission is the process through which one student will enter into the post-secondary.

The college admissions differ from country to country. In India, after the completion of higher secondary education, students will go for degree programmes such as engineering, medical, law, bachelor’s degree in arts, commerce or science.

Admission process varies from state to state in India. Admission to State level colleges is based on the state level examinations. Some states have their special examinations for the engineering and medical courses. But for admission into the federal institutes like IITs(engineering), NITs(engineering) etc  depend on  combination of the nationwide examinations and marks of higher secondary .

The main governing body at the post-secondary level is UGC (University Grants Commission). It helps in the coordination between center and state governments.
